Let's 'chaat' about it!

Last Updated 07 July 2017, 18:34 IST

It’s always raining sweets at ‘Bhartiya Jalpan’, a fairly new restaurant in Indirangar. Essentially serving ‘namkeens’ and ‘mewas’ in the North East, the eatery is dishing out all that along with some tangy ‘chaat’ items in Bengaluru.

It’s a house that has been converted into a restaurant, so there is a homely feel to it. But the interesting part is that it’s always bustling with customers who come craving some delicious food. If you ignore the fact that it is located on the busy 100 Feet Road of Indiranagar, it’s a rather pleasant place to hang out at for a quick snack.

Coming to the menu, it’s simple, quick and just what everyone expects at a ‘chaat’ and sweet shop. As you start trying out the dishes, you’ll soon realise how pure the ‘ghee’ used is. And every item is prepared on order at the live counter, so be ready to wait a bit.

Some of their fast-moving items are ‘samosa’, ‘kachori’ and ‘dhokla’. The ‘samosa’ has the perfect crunch to it and the filling is just appropriate, but if you’re not a fan of the asafoetida flavour, you might just hesitate to have a second bite.

The ‘kachori’, on the other hand, is crisp and goes perfectly well with the ‘chutney’ served. The ‘dhoklas’ come in variations like ‘paneer’, chilli and cheese which are a crowd- pleaser. What’s nice is that it doesn’t stick to your mouth.

However, if you’re in the mood for some ‘chaats’, they have some interesting options to choose from. The ‘Chhola bhatura’ is as good as it looks. The fluffy ‘bhatura’ deflates as soon as you poke into it and the combination of ‘chhole’ will easily fill you up.

The ‘Pani puri’ is served as per order. Their ‘Sev puri’, ‘Papdi chaat’ and ‘Pav bhaji’ are also must-haves. And since you are at a sweet shop, do try their ‘namkeens’ and ‘mewas’ too. Each one is special in its own right and it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll come back here for more. The place is a bit heavy on the pocket but the quality more than makes up for that.

End your evening with their homemade ‘lassi’, ‘buttermilk’ and ‘tea’ which are served in mud pots.

If you have any specific requests with your order, you can specify that at the counter itself. It’s a self-service restaurant and just where you need to head to for a quick snack.

‘Bhartiya Jalpan’ is located at 1138, 100 Feet Road, HAL 2nd Stage, Indiranagar. For details, call 48525797.
