Former Union minister and Congress candidate C M Ibrahim was, on Thursday, declared elected unopposed in the byelection to the Karnataka Legislative Council.

The Legislative Assembly secretary (in-charge) S Murthy, who is the returning officer, announced Ibrahim’s election. Thursday was the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers. Ibrahim was the only candidate in the fray. The Opposition parties, the BJP and the JD(S), had not fielded their candidates due to lack of numerical strength to win the bypoll.

Members of the Legislative Assembly were the voters in the bypoll and hence, the ruling Congress, which has majority in the lower House, easily won the seat. The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of BJP member Vimala Gowda recently.

Later, Ibrahim told reporters that he is not an aspirant for a ministerial post, but is ready to take up any responsibility given by the party leaders.
