Three undertrials lodged in the sub-jail at Chikkodi in the district escaped by removing the stones of the rear wall of the jail in the wee hours of Saturday.
The escapees are Sharad Pawar from Miraj in Maharashtra, Neetin Jadhav from Galataga in Chikkodi taluk and Ashok Bhosale from Kohalli village in Athani taluk.
The undertrials had been arrested on charges of dacoity, burglary and thefts. Police suspect that the undertrials escaped between 1.30 am and 4 am. They have launched an operation to nab the undertrials.
Two constables G K Kamble and Suresh Holigar, who had been deployed to guard the sub-jail, have been suspended for dereliction of duty. The Chikkodi police have registered a case.
