Overflowing manhole: residents block DC's car

Last Updated 02 November 2017, 22:02 IST

The residents of Gulpet in Kolar blocked the official vehicle of the deputy commissioner on Tuesday demanding a permanent solution for the overflowing manhole on the road.

The residents, who staged a dharna by blocking the roads with stones, said that the manhole had been overflowing since the pourakarmikas had not cleaned it. The municipal officials too have not taken any steps despite repeated complaints, they alleged.

They said that the discharge from houses in the locality was flowing on the road since the manhole had been blocked. Even the drains have been filled with sewerage from the manhole turning the whole area into a slum. This has increased mosquito, flies and pig menace, posing health hazard, the residents complained. They said that garbage disposal system had derailed. "We are facing the fear of epidemic outbreak. Already, several people have been hospitalised due to various infections. The councillor from the ward has not cared to hear our woes," they said.

The residents also blocked the official vehicle of Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer B B Kaveri.

Responding to their woes, deputy commissioner G Satyavathi called municipal commissioner S A Ramprakash over the phone. However, he did not answer the call. Later, the DC called planning director Renuka and ordered her to address the issue at the earliest.
