Weavers' loan up to Rs 50K to be waived: Lamani

 Textiles Minister Rudrappa Lamani on Monday said short-term loan, up to Rs 50,000, borrowed by weavers from cooperative societies will be waived.

At a press conference here, he said he was making the announcement following an instruction by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The weavers' loan waiver will be on the lines of waiver of agricultural loan, he added.

The minister said 9,000 weavers will be benefited from the move and their loan - Rs 55.17 crore - will be waived.

He said the loan of spinning mills, amounting to Rs 199 crore, has been converted into shares. To provide market to the products of weavers, permisison has been given to Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation and Karnataka State Textiles Infrastructure Development Corporation to produce 65 lakh metres and 15 lakh metres of clothes. Fifty percent advance has been given to these agencies already, he added.
Lamani said 0.5 HP mini machines will be given to handloom weavers. The Union governnent will be requested to consider it as an ungraded handloom. It will be helpful to provide facilities to consider them as handloom weavers, he added.

Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation chairman Raveendra Kalaburgi was present.
