District administration went ahead with demolishing Government buildings in the area. Meanwhile, District Administration urged the private building owners to co-operate and vacate buildings but the private building owners did not pay heed to the request and they awaited till the JCBs came to their buildings to pull down the structure.

Gone forever

During the demolition, 97-year old Clock Tower House at Hanumanthappa Circle was also pulled down. It was known as the first ‘Mangalore tile roofed’ building of Chikmagalur. While the building owners started building their castle in the air thinking that once the old structure is demolished and once their new buildings will come up, they can charge higher rent for the shops, the traders have started dreading that the new plush buildings which will come up in the area will not be accessible to them because of the high rent. During the course of the demolition work, the entire city had to live without power because the electricity lines were cut off by 10 am on Friday.

IG Road was closed for all vehicles. KSRTC buses had to take bypass road and private vehicles had to take Bar Lane. Due to this, the density of vehicles have doubled at Bar Lane and M G Road.
