The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to allot flats in the ground floor for the physically challenged persons, in the housing project at Shakthinagar for the urban poor.

The flats will be constructed for the poor by converging grants from Central, state governments, MCC and beneficiaries. As many as 930 beneficiaries have been selected.

The allotment of flats for the beneficiaries through picking lottery was held at Town Hall in Mangaluru on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA J R Lobo said, "The physically challenged beneficiaries names have not been included for picking the lottery as they will be provided the flat in the ground floor."

The legislator said further, "The MCC has received 4,000 applications seeking housing facilities. It has been proposed to construct 1,500 houses in the next phase. The ground-plus-three type of apartment blocks will come up on a 10-acre land at Rajivnagara in Shaktinagar. It has also been proposed to construct 930 flats. The unit cost of each flat is Rs 5 lakh, of which, Rs 1.80 lakh grant will be given by the Centre for SC/ST beneficiaries and Rs 1.20 lakh for general category. The state government will give Rs 1.5 lakh for SC/ST beneficiaries and Rs 1.2 lakh for general category. The City Corporation will give a grant of Rs 1 lakh for SC/ST beneficiaries and Rs 75,000 for general category. The remaining amount will be a bank loan for the beneficiaries."

Lobo added that 91 cents will be used to provide basic amenities while a park will come up on 1.36-acre land at the site. "It has been proposed to lay foundation stone for the apartments in the last week of February by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. By including basic facilities, the beneficiaries will get property worth Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh," Lobo explained.

Chief Whip of the Government in Legislative Council Ivan D'Souza directed the lead bank to ensure that the beneficiaries do not face any hurdle in the sanctioning of the loan. Solar power units should be installed in all the households, he instructed.
