Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the Maharani's Commerce and Management College and hostel at Paduvarahalli here on Wednesday. The CM will also lay the foundation stone for the second phase of construction works on the college premises.

The college, which is spread across 4.32 acres of land, has been developed at a cost of Rs 174.60 crore and has 85 rooms, including 32 classrooms, one principal's room, 12 rooms for heads of the departments, 21 staff rooms, one office, four library, six reading rooms, one computer centre, one seminar hall, one NCC and sports room and one counseling room. Similarly, the hostel spreads across one acre of the land has 117 rooms and 1,000 students can be accommodated.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, MLA Vasu said that the new college is a bifurcation of the century-old Maharani's Arts and Commerce College for Women. The new college has been constructed to address the issues of the student community. Due to lack of infrastructure facilities and overcrowding at the Arts and Commerce College, the students were inconvenienced as there were no adequate toilets and other facilities, the MLA said.

In view of providing more facilities, the college and the hostel will be upgraded with another two floors. The CM will lay the foundation stone for the works during the inaugural ceremony, Vasu said.

"The works will be taken up at a cost of Rs 50 crore. While Rs 43.46 crore is for upgrading the college and hostel, the remaining Rs 6.37 crore is earmarked for the construction of compound wall, for furniture and underground drainage system. They have planned to celebrate the centenary of the Maharani's College in February," he said.

The state government has sanctioned a hostel for Maharani's Arts and Commerce College for Women. The hostel will be constructed on Nanjaraj Bahadur Choultry premises. The government has earmarked Rs 46 crore for the construction works, he informed.

To provide education to women, Chamaraja Wodeyar X established the Maharani's Girls School with primary and middle school sections in 1881 with 28 girls. In 1902, the institution was upgraded as a second-grade college with the name Maharani's College and it was affiliated with the University of Madras. The institution was further upgraded into a full-fledged first-grade college in 1920 and came under the University of Mysore, which was established in 1916.

Maharani's Arts and Commerce College for Women, which is a milestone in promoting higher education among women, is a premier institution in the country. The college is the first of its kind in Karnataka, offering courses in Arts, Commerce, and Management.
