HC stays land scam FIR against former Dy CM Ashoka

Last Updated 26 January 2018, 02:28 IST

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday stayed the first information report (FIR) registered against BJP leader and former deputy chief minister R Ashoka till March 31.

Justice R B Budihal passed the interim order while hearing a petition filed by Ashoka, who has moved the court seeking quashing of the FIR filed against him by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) with regard to his involvement in the Bagair Hukum land scam.

The bench stayed the FIR on the basis that it was politically motivated.

Ashoka, who was chairman of the Bengaluru South taluk Bagair Hukum Land Regularisation Committee from 1998 to 2006 in his capacity as Uttarahalli MLA, has been accused by the ACB of sanctioning the land to those not eligible for the same.

According to Ashoka, the charges were false and the complaint was filed with the motive to harass him, by the opposition. He said the complaint had been engineered by the ruling Congress, which is trying to malign him as he is one of the top BJP leaders.

The bench said the investigation should be stayed till the issues raised in the petitions filed by Ashoka and Karthik B, a beneficiary of the land scam, were considered by the court.
