Last Updated 30 January 2018, 12:57 IST

A 24-year old youth, who was said to have been killed in  the communal violence at Kasganj on Republic Day, along with saffron activist Chandan Gupta, surfaced on Tuesday.

The youth, Rahul Upadhyaya, was produced before the media by police in Kasganj to scotch rumours of his death in the violence.

Condolence messages poured on social media after posts that Rahul had also been "killed" in the clashes surfaced.

He said that he was not present at Kasganj when the violence broke out.

"I was at my village. I came to know about my 'death' from social media. Some people spread rumours that I had been killed in the violence. People started posting condolence messages also," Rahul told reporters.

Rumours of Rahul's death had spread tension in the riot-torn town.

The "dead" youth met police officers at Kasganj on Tuesday, who then produced him before the media.

The police said that four people had been taken into custody on charges of spreading false rumours on social media.

The situation in riot-torn Kashganj remained peaceful on Tuesday with no report of any untoward incident from anywhere.

Sources said that over 125 people had been arrested in connection with the violence.

Sources said that the police had been conducting raids in different parts of the state to nab Waseem, the person, who reportedly fired at Chandan during the clashes.
