Rau had assumed charge of Rajasthan Raj Bhawan on January 25 this year after her predecessor S K Singh died while in office in December last year.

Rau was currently in Delhi staying at the Jodhpur House where she reportedly slipped in a toilet around 11 am on Monday. When she did not open the door for a long time, her assistant knocked and found her on the toilet floor. She was immediately rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences where she was declared dead at 12:30 pm, official sources here said.
She is survived by two daughters — Sanyogita Kamlesh Morarji and Charulata Khajan Singh Tokas. Rau is the fourth Raj Bhawan occupant in Rajasthan to breathe her last while in office.

Born in Wasu family of freedom fighters in Wardha, Maharashtra, Rau was  a Cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government for four times. She was chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission from 1993-95 and was also elected Member of Parliament from Wardha in 1999.

The state has declared a seven-day mourning as a mark of respect. The Cabinet meeting headed by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot paid tributes to her.
