Keeping cool & calm with cement tiles...

Last Updated 22 March 2018, 10:30 IST

Cement tiles, also known as hydraulic tiles, are colourful handcrafted tiles that are used for floors and walls. They incorporate the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi in them and they don't have a glazed layer on their surface. They derive their durability from a combination of finely dehydrated ground Portland cement layer and a more coarse layer of sand and cement. The pigment layer is hydraulically pressed into the surface and becomes a part of the tile. A well-made cement tile can be expected to last more than 60 to 70 years. They make a perfect summer addition if you plan on refurbishing your space as they add a pop of colour too.

How are they made

Cement tiles are handmade using mineral pigments, a mould and a hydraulic press. The mould is again handcrafted as per the required design. After the tile is cast by the artisan, it is cured in water for a period of time, and then air-dried before being shipped.

The patterns in these tiles are not painted or printed, rather coloured cement is poured into divider moulds to create a variety of designs. These patterns are a layer on the surface of the tile and are 10-15mm thick. As a result, they are long-lasting.

Perfectly imperfect

Because of the traditional processes involved in the production of these tiles, slight defects such as small edge splinters, colour smudging between elements of the pattern and surface scratches are inevitable. In addition, some tiles may have a small crack or cobweb-like formations on them. This is normal and is due to curing and chemical processes that occur in the cement. It's these imperfections that give these tiles their distinct charm and appeal.

In addition, free lime from the curing process will float on the top of the tile, forming a whitish layer on top. This is called efflorescence, it will go away gradually with regular cleaning of the floor. While cleaning, avoid using harsh chemicals, just plain water should do. Ensure that you change the water regularly while mopping your floors to keep the tiles clean for a long time.

Popular trends

The world of flooring has always had a number of staples such as marble, wood, ceramics and cement. However, new forms of flooring that are emerging have started to change how traditional materials are applied and come with plenty of textures and patterns.

Designers have started using concrete materials, including patterned cement tiles and micro-toppings in their decor. Heritage tiles have become a rage and the patterns used have started reflecting modern sensibilities with pastel colours, lots of geometric and minimalist designs, and some funky use of tile design to create ikats.

Cement-based micro toppings can be used indoors and outdoors to provide a clean canvas for decorative treatments such as stain, dyes, textures and stencilled patterns. With virtually unlimited design options and quick installation time, micro-cement floors can turn any space into a vibrant and beautifully designed area. The micro-cement floor is designed to be overlaid on top of the existing floor, thus preventing the need to remove existing floors. So, this season do something different and get colourful!
