Anandi Gopal Joshi, one of the earliest female doctor in India who studied in America and served people in southern Maharashtra, completes 153rd birth anniversary on Saturday. As usual, Google created the doodle as an honour to her.

Anandi Gopal Joshi was born on 31 March 1865 in Kalyan of erstwhile Bombay Presidency. As the existing social custom, she got married when she was 9-year-old. Her husband Gopalrao Joshi could not avoid her dream to study further. He inspired her to proceed in medicine.

Despite bad health condition, she set off to America to do diploma in medicine at Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (now known as Drexel University College of Medicine). She returned to the homeland thinking to start a medical college. On returning, she was appointed as physician-in-charge in Albert Edward Hospital in Kolhapur in 1886.

Her dream was cut short when tuberculosis claimed her life next year. By then she was 22. However, her legacy inspires the generations of women even today. There is a crater in Venus after her name.

According to Google, a Bengaluru-based artist Kashmira Sarode created the doodle. The doodle visualises Anandi Gopal Joshi celebrating her medical degree.
