Giving details, a defence spokesman said the incident occurred during a cordon-and- search operation. “Based on intelligence inputs, a joint operation was launched by the Army and police in the Rafiabad and Hapatnar forests in Baramulla district,” he said.
As the operation was in progress, the militants opened fire. The search party retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for several hours.

“The militants attempted to flee due to inclement weather. However, their attempt was foiled because of tight cordon laid by troops,” he said.

According to the spokesman, six militants were killed. “Two brave army personnel attained martyrdom succumbing to their injuries sustained during the encounter,” he said.
