Cleaning up the mess

Last Updated 08 October 2014, 14:23 IST

Awareness needed

Pooja Katta, a student of Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology, said, “While some parts of the city are clean, many remain dirty. The ‘Swachh Bharat’ Movement has done a lot of good but they are cleaning areas that are already clean and ignoring the worst-hit parts of a city.

We need to create awareness among the uneducated section of the society. But when it comes to educated people, there is no hope, because they think they know everything and will continue to litter.”

The right touch

Archana, a student of Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology, said, “I’m really happy that people are taking part in movements to clean cities across the country.

Although I haven’t been a part of any such activity till now, I would love to be. I believe that you can’t personally go and tell everyone not to litter or spit but if you have nice signboards and attractive branding, people will be motivated to keep their surrounding clean.”

Even as the government is struggling to find a solution to the rising garbage problem, the youth in the City and around the country are rallying to make each street a cleaner and better one thanks to movements like ‘Swachh Bharat’.

One sees multiple initiatives encouraging people to take the next step towards keeping their vicinity clean. While some agree that social movements are a good way to educate the masses, others believe that they are only a temporary solution to keeping cities clean. Even if it means walking door-to-door and talking to people, some students think it is worth the effort to keep the surroundings clean.

Youth power

Usha M Kamble, a student of Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women, said, “People should start by taking small steps like cleaning their houses first and then the immediate surroundings. Segregating the waste and planting more trees is a good way to get started. Colleges are taking initiatives and youngsters are becoming more conscious.”

Word-of-mouth

Aishwarya Appanna, a student of Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women, said, “People are only concerned about keeping their houses clean and not about the garbage around.

We need to cultivate good habits where we look at our surroundings as well. It can be small, like going from house to house and spreading awareness, but people should do something. These days, youngsters take it up as a fad for a few days and then forget about it.”
