“The CPC will process all electronic tax returns of the entire country, and physical returns of Karnataka and Goa regions,” said Finance Ministry in a statement here on Friday.

The centre is equipped with a dedicated call centre, where taxpayers can enquire about the status of their returns and refunds, and also has a remote record storage unit, which reduces congestion in the I-T offices.

The CPC is a flagship e-governance project of the Centre. It promises to significantly improve delivery of citizen-centric services in line with international practices. The CPC will enable the department to cope with rapid growth in the number of taxpayers and consequently lower the volume of work handled by I-T officials.

The Cabinet had approved the proposal of the CPC last year. Eventually, the I-T department plans to bring the CPC model to more cities across the country after gaining experience from the Bangalore centre.
