Mamata set to clip Lalu's wings

She is likely to withdraw the “free lifetime pass” that Lalu issued to himself for travelling in first class air-conditioned coaches with as many as three companions.

Mamata dropped enough hints to the media on Thursday that she was acting on a demand made by BJP leader Ram Naik, a former minister of state for railways, to withdraw Lalu’s pass.

The order for issue of pass to Lalu and his companions was given on May 19 — three days after the Lok Sabha results were announced, and when it was almost clear that he may not continue as railway minister. The privilege was also extended to ministers of state for railways. In their case, a sole companion and one attendant were entitled to the free tickets. Mamata said: “This kind of misuse must not happen,” she said when asked whether the order was being revoked.

“It is my firm belief that taking such a decision for personal benefits after the announcement of LS election results is improper and unethical. I request you to review the decision and withdraw the additional facility,” Naik had said.
