Last Updated 25 June 2010, 16:19 IST

Addressing reporters, Kumbla Grama Panchayt Vice President N Keshava Prasad said that the Gram Panchayat has resolved to name the 450 meter-long Old Telephone Exchange Road after Anil Kumble.

The road will be inaugurated by Kumble himself on June 27. Later, a civic reception programme will be organised to honour the googly magician at City Hall at 3 pm. The cricket star will be taken in a procession to the venue, he added.

Kasargod MP P Karunakaran will be the guest on the occasion. Kumbla Grama Panchayat President M Abbas will preside over the function.

The Gram Panchayat in association with local donors has laid interlocks on the road at an estimated cost of Rs 8 lakh. It is for the first time that Kumble is being honoured in his ancestral place, Prasad explained.

The Gram Panchayat had decided to hold a civic reception to Kumble on November 21 last year.  However, in the wake of communal clashes and other untoward incidents, the programme was postponed.
