Widespread protests in AP condemn Naidu's arrest by Maha cops

Last Updated 17 July 2010, 10:14 IST

Angry TDP workers burnt effigy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in Hyderabad while a rail-blockade was staged in Guntur city.

They strongly resented the way in which a leader of the stature of Chandrababu Naidu was treated by the Maharashtra government.

The agitators demanded that the TDP delegation be allowed to inspect Babhli and other irrigation projects said to have been built illegally by Maharashtra on river Godavari.
TDP workers came on to the streets in other places in the state and raised slogans against the Congress party.

The party activists raised slogans against Maharashtra Chief Minister as well as his AP counterpart K Rosaiah denouncing the arrest of the former Chief Minister.
TDP organised protests in Adilabad and Nizamabad districts bordering Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, senior TDP leaders like Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, Nagam Janardhana Reddy, Kodela Siva Prasada Rao and others met in the NTR Bhavan here to discuss the situation following the arrest of Chandrababu and other leaders yesterday.
They said they are in constant touch over phone with Chandrababu and other arrested leaders, currently detained in Dharmabad close to the AP-Maharashtra border, and planning their moves.

"Sonia Gandhi flies down to inaugurate each and every project in the state. Will she inaugurate the illegal Babhli project as well," Nagam Janardhana Reddy questioned angrily.
He asserted that Babhli and 13 other projects being built by Maharashtra on Godavari were illegal as they did not have any clearances. "Let the Maharashtra government show the clearances it got for these projects," he challenged.
