AI: Compensation to victims' kin in 3 months

Air India erected a memorial in honour of 158 crash victims at Kenjar, the crash site and organised an all-religion prayer meet at T M A Pai Convention Centre on Tuesday.
Addressing the reporters later, Jadhav said that the Air India is ready to disburse compensation as per the international agreement and already a sum of Rs 10 lakh has been distributed as interim relief to the family of each victim. The remaining amount will be distributed at the earliest.

“In some cases, compensation could not be given due to some legal hitches. However, the process of collection of details of the victims is proceeding and we want to be safe than being sorry. The district administration is the best judge to decide the legal heir of the deceased who should get compensation and jobs,” Jadhav said.

Family members of victims had been asked to keep all the documents ready so that the compensation process goes on smoothly and it reaches the right claimants, he said and added that once the documents are submitted and compensation is paid there is no scope for correction or rectification. Hence, compensation was being distributed only after scrupulously scrutinising the documents. Air India was constantly in touch with the immigration authorities concerned and Embassy in Dubai for the purpose. Civil Aviation Ministry Secretary Madhavan Nambiar said the ministry as well as Air India are striving to ensure that the families of the deceased were not in inconvenienced. The ministry has expedited the process of disbursement of compensation. “Each and every case will be considered individually for payment of compensation,” he said.
