RLSS Founder President Rear Admiral Purushottam Datt Sharma, Strategic Development with SLSA General Manager  Norm Farmer and Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project CEO Yathish Baikampady signed MoU with the motto of ‘Together we save lives.’

Speaking on the occasion, Purushottam Datt Sharma said the Rashtriya Life Saving Society India is a PAN Indian organisation which had been involved in lifesaving operations in the country for the last 12 years. It also conducts training to interested persons to join the mission of life saving along with expertising the people in the life saving activity at beaches.

Norm Farmer said Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) is the world leader in beach safety with 103 years of experience.

Yathish Baikampady said that between 1995 and 2008, about 115 lives have been lost due to downing at Panambur beach. With the introduction of lifeguards, the number of drowning cases reduced to 4 and since 2009, the Project has achieved a feat of zero deaths due to drowning. The beach is today maintained regularly and is made safe with lifeguards on patrol.  The joint venture of life saving will start with training for local interested candidates who will train others in future. The life saving in Panambur beach will get international standard. “We aim at promoting beach tourism and safety of tourists.”

The lifeguards at Panambur beach saved 32 lives during this year where nearly 24 lifeguards  are involved in the operation depending on the season.
