Bangalore will be hosting an auction, Antiquarian Books, Maps, Prints and Photographs, soon. This auction preceded with a public preview of the art pieces at Alliance Francaise de Bangalore recently.

The preview had various connoisseurs of art coming in to gain a view of the era gone by. The auction which is called Antiquarian Books, Maps, Prints & Photographs comprises pieces of arts spanning more than 200 years from 18th to 20th century of the Indian history. The artifacts were something that would even capture the attention of an ordinary person.

With an emphasis largely on the Company Period, which is considered as the golden era of the British Raj, this preview would surely interest collectors and historians. The theme of the collection is based on one of the most captivating time periods of Indian history, which still continues to intrigue generations of collectors in India and abroad.

“We believe this auction is truly unique and is a significant and path-breaking endeavour which will capture the imagination of every true art connoisseur,” said Maher Dadha, Managing Director, Bid and Hammer Auctioneers.

The collection covers over 200 visual impressions in the form of books, prints, maps and photographs. The individual prints as well as illustrations in the books and maps have been printed on paper by various printing techniques like engravings, aquatints, etchings, and lithography, some even painstakingly tinted with colour by hand.

The historically significant visual impressions depict among other things, beautiful landscapes, monuments and also portraits of Maharajas.  The auction has some of the earliest visual recordings of the significant historical events like coronation, warfare and the different revolutions which have shaped up the country to the present.

It also includes an exclusive series of prints dedicated to the life of Tipu Sultan, which captures the indomitable spirit of the great revolutionist hero of South India. Some of the renowned artists featured in this auction are George Edwards, William Hodges, Henry Salt, Robert Colebrook, James Forbes, Thomas and William Daniel. And among the many illustrious photographers represented are Lala Deen Dayal, Edmund David Lyon, Penn, Samuel Bourne.

The public preview of the collection was held at Alliance Francaise. The auction would be held at ITC Windsor on  August 17.
