'Mega lok adalats across State soon'

Addressing a news conference here on Sunday, she said the Centre has allocated Rs 20 crore to the legal service authorities in each of the State under the 13th finance commission to hold mega lok adalats and solve long-time cases.

In Karnataka, the programme will be implemented in 12 districts where the number of pending cases is more than 65,000. Mysore district is also included in the list. It aims to hold Lok Adalats everyday, the judge said. The mega adalat would lay emphasis on solving the cases through mediation. A majority of the pending cases were related to family disputes, motor vehicle accidents and others, she said. Besides, the programme would also cover other 18 districts on alternative days. The Authority had formed several committees to carry out legal awareness programme in State. The first and third Saturday of every month was being observed as ‘Legal Awareness Day’, she added.

The Authority was running three mobile information and awareness campaign in the taluk levels. These mobile awareness campaign would cover each of the taluk every three days. She disclosed that more than 2 lakh cases were pending before High Court. However, the number of pending cases in the State was less when compared to other States. “We hope that the Mega Lok Adalats will help cut down at least 75 per cent of the pending cases. In Bangalore alone, the Lok Adalats have disposed about 8,000 cases through amicable settlement, she said.
