Enigmatic superstar

Last Updated 18 September 2010, 12:39 IST

Be it Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bachchan, Dimple Kapadia, Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon or the recent Gayatri Joshi, these actresses have either decided to focus on their family, or they have not been able to repeat their success after tying the knot.

As Madhuri Dixit had once said in a media interview when quizzed about whether she misses the arc lights or not, “Not at all. I’m too busy being a wife and mother. It was my dream to have my own family, which is as important as my career.”

In fact, the lady with the killer smile had even gone on to explain that she enjoyed stardom and acting for few years and now she was enjoying being the housewife.
Twinkle Khanna, the other star who also bid Bollywood goodbye after marriage, went on record in an interview to a leading daily and said that she hated acting when she was at it and after getting married and having a baby, she is enjoying every bit of life.

Always an exception

But as with any other rule, this too norm in Bollywood too has exceptions; Kajol being the most notable one. Not only has she been able to make a successful comeback through Fanaa, she also gave memorable performances in films like My Name Is Khan.
While most heroines are not very open about their personal life,  Kajol has always taken the other route. “I am quite chilled out about all these things and have nothing to hide. I think being married and then becoming a mother are the two best things in the world. I enjoy it thoroughly. Every day morning I pray to and thank God for having given such a wonderful family,” says the actress, who recently delivered a baby boy.

Though Kajol was recently in the limelight for her film We Are Family, she has by and large been elusive for the media. Is it an intentional move like her husband who rarely talks to the media? “I like to stay away from controversies. I am a simple person and like to live life simply. I have noticed that if I speak to the media only when the need arises, life can be very peaceful. There is no other reason for me staying away from the media,” admits Kajol.

But whatever grudges one might have — about Kajol not being media-friendly — will vanish once you meet her. Not only will she make you feel at home, but also talk to you as the girl next door without any air one would like to associate with a superstar of her caliber.

The actress who proved to the world that intelligence and a dark complexion need not stand in the way of becoming a superstar has lived an elusive superstar’s role perfectly. In that way, Ajay and Kajol make the perfect pair and complement each other. “We are very happy being the way we are,” says the actress.

Girl next door

While Kajol’s family has always been picture perfect, there has been a rumour floating around about Ajay not watching her films at all. Is that true? Kajol laughs our loudly before answering the question. “Yes, it is true. And taking a cue from him, I have also stopped watching his films. I have told him that until and unless he budges from his stand, I am not going to move an inch!” says Kajol.

Interestingly enough, all the comeback roles that Kajol has essayed after getting married have seen her playing the mother. “It was definitely not a conscious decision. It just happened because of the good scripts each of those films had and the fantastic roles that were offered to me,” explains Kajol.

In We are Family she plays the role originally played by Susan Sarandon in Stepmom. “I was pregnant when the film went on floor and was not very keen on doing it. However, Siddharth Malhotra (the director) kept on insisting and I had to give in later,” the actress explains.

Kajol provides another tip about being happy and successful in life. “I never run after perfection. Every woman has multiple roles to play — a wife, daughter and mother. You cannot be perfect in all these roles. You just need to have the right balance. All of us need to look after ourselves. If we are happy and content, only then will we be able to make others happy,” she shares. One feels, the happiness reflects in her nature, performance and also success. Touchwood.
