Speaking with Deccan Herald, Kumar expressed his condolences to the family of Bhanupriya and stated that garbage alone was not the reason for her death.

“On the unfortunate day, Bhanupriya, according to eyewitnesses I spoke with, swerved towards the left to avoid hitting a stray cattle on the road and skidded on the polythene bags. She was not even wearing a helmet. Garbage on that day was very minimal,” he said.

Garbage overflowing

The corporator, however, did admit that the death of the girl could not be pinned on any particular person or organisation. “We cannot blame on anyone. There have been problems of garbage overflowing in the ward and the small space along the Krumbigal Road is the only collection point,” he said.

It is learnt that the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) had placed a transformer in the same space where the garbage is being dumped, thus creating constraint and leading to garbage overflow on the main road.

“We are trying to push for a small enclosure to ensure that the garbage does not flow on the roads. The residents on the stretch had already placed a petition for the garbage collection point to be enclosed or shifted. We will take some measures,” said Kumar.
