The latest instalment of the YRF Spy Universe, ‘War 2’, is perhaps also the worst of all their films.
.
In this sequel to ‘War’ (2019), spy agent Kabir (a compelling Hrithik) is back to save the country from a South Asian business cartel, Kali. Business tycoons from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China and more have formed a syndicate, and their first mission is to assassinate India’s PM. Can Kabir, considered a traitor owing to certain circumstances and on R&AW’s most-wanted list, stop the assassination?
.
It’s nice to see familiar faces like Col Luthra, as well as references to previous films. However, outdated flashbacks, cheesy dialogues, over-the-top chemistry between the leads (Hrithik and Jr NTR) and physics-defying action scenes make the movie an exhausting three-hour watch.
.
Jr NTR is a total miscast. His character is poorly written and lacks emotional depth. The actor fails to carry the aura of an antagonist who can match the protagonist — like John Abraham and Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Pathaan’, and Emraan Hashmi and Salman Khan in ‘Tiger 3’. The lack of emotional depth in the characters and the story is the real concern in ‘War 2’. It’s the emotions in all other YRF Spy Universe films that make them memorable. Even the music of ‘War 2’ isn’t compelling.
.
I would’ve enjoyed watching Kiara Advani in more action scenes. She plays a fighter pilot recruited in the mission to find Kabir, and is natural as she flips her gun to fight the enemy.
.
Now that even ‘War 2’ has failed to make an impact, director Ayan, who’s given hits like ‘Wake Up Sid’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, should accept action is not his strong forte.
