Year-ender 2025 | Climate disasters across the world

As per reports, India had extreme weather events on 99 per cent of days during January to September 2025.

2025 is coming to an end, and many events this year are worth remembering. However, this year saw several extreme weather events worth mentioning. The Climate India 2025 report by the Centre for Science and Environment and Down To Earth stated that India had extreme weather events on 99 per cent of days during January to September. Let us take a look at what major climate events and natural disasters took place this year:

Flood fury in Assam, Manipur

In June this year, the Northeastern states in India witnessed floods , affecting nearly 8 lakh people. At least eight rivers including the Brahmaputra and the Barak were flowing above the danger level at several places.

Uttarakhand floods and landslides

Uttarakhand witnessed deadly rains and cloudburst, claiming many lives. Several people were said to be missing as heavy rains and cloudburst wreaked havoc in Dehradun and nearby places in Uttarakhand. Torrential rains caused widespread damage in the Garhwal region, damaging roads, bridges, hotels and shops.

Landslide in Jammu

Vehicles stuck as a portion of the Fourth Tawi Bridge damaged after relentless rainfall, in Jammu.

In August, many pilgrims were killed in landslide on Vaishno Devi route, in Jammu. This landslide was followed by cloudburst unleashed flash floods in Chisoti, killing atleast 65 people, mostly pilgrims, and injured many others.

Then on August 17, another cloudburst wreaked havoc in Jod Ghati village of Kathua district. At least seven people, including four children, lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries.

Cyclone Ditwah

Cyclone Ditwah affected many in Sri Lanka this December, as death toll climbed to 465, with 366 missing.

Sri Lanka grappled with widespread flooding, landslides and infrastructure collapse triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, leaving several districts isolated and severely straining the country’s disaster-response capacity.

India launched Operation Sagar Bandhu on November 28 to help Sri Lanka recover from the devastation caused by the cyclone.

According to the Climate Risk Index 2026, over 8,32,000 people died due to extreme weather events worldwide between 1995 and 2024. In the list of countries most affected by extreme weather conditions, India is listed on the 9th rank.

As per reports, extreme weather events during June to September monsoon season claimed atleast 1,528 lives across India.

Of the total deaths, 935 were caused by floods and heavy rains, while 570 people were killed in lightning and thunderstorms, 22 deaths were linked to heat waves.
