<p>Putting an end to speculations that the state government is working towards bringing forth the 2016 Assembly polls to winter this year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee categorically stated in the state Assembly on Saturday that the Assembly elections will take place at the scheduled time next year.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Rubbishing the claims made by a section of the media, Banerjee said that the elections will not be brought forward. “The elections will take place as a scheduled,” she said. Reacting to news reports that Banerjee was planning to bring the polls forward, leaders of the BJP, which has emerged as the primary opposition party in the state despite having just one MLA, said that the chief minister was making such a plan because she is scared of losing.<br /><br />While ruling Trinamool Congress leaders have been maintaining a studied silence on the matter, Banerjee brought the rumour mills to a halt with her statement. Although senior BJP and Left leaders did not seem convinced with Mamata’s words and claimed to be keeping an eye on the situation, a senior Trinamool leader said, “Despite their bravado on the surface, the opposition parties know that they do not stand a chance, whenever the polls are held. They are just putting up a brave face to cover up their insecurities.” </p>
