Gandhi family must pay for its 'sins': BJP on ED's attachment of National Herald assets

New Delhi: In response to the Congress’s accusation of “petty politics” over the attachments of assets in the National Herald case, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Gandhi family must pay for its sins.

“The ED has recently attached properties worth over Rs 700 crore in the National Herald case. Ironically, a senior Congress leader called it the ‘Murder of Democracy’. The BJP wants to ask Congress how could any action taken against rank dishonesty, corruption and loot of public property be a negation of democracy,” Prasad asked, during a press conference at the party headquarters.

Prasad said that the formation of the company Young India was utilised by the Congress to take over the assets of the paper. “This is a new low in the democracy of India. The Congress family is trading through illegal means. The family does not only control the legacy of the party and the freedom struggle but also the moveable and immovable property as well,” he alleged.

The Rajya Sabha MP also alleged that while the Congress party says that they have worked in the freedom struggle, they appropriated the fight for freedom in the Gandhi family and the family’s rule over the party thus began. “This family also considers the property of the Independence campaign as their heritage and personal property. This is a very shameful decline in India’s democracy,” Prasad said.

“You think that you keep looting but no action should be taken. The family must pay for its sins, corruption and misuse of power,” he added.

Prasad also said when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, PM Narendra Modi was also questioned by agencies in cases related to the 2002 Gujarat riots but BJP workers did not carry out protests.
