<p>India has joined for the first time the race for the post of Interpol Secretary General and CBI has sought External Affairs Ministry's help to mobilize support for the candidature of CBI chief Ranjit Sinha.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Sinha, the first Indian to be shortlisted for Interpol Secretary General, will have to appear before the Executive Committee of the Interpol on June 16 at Lyon in France where the Interpol headquarters is located, official sources said today. 61-year-old Sinha, who is the country's senior most IPS officer, was shortlisted along with three candidates from Europe, one each from Africa and the United States.<br /><br />The members of the Executive Committee comprise representatives of the United States, Canada, Chile, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Japan, Korea, Nigeria, Algeria, Rwanda and Qatar and is headed by Mireille Ballestrazzi of France.<br /><br />The appointment will go to 190-member General Assembly in case there is no consensus among the Executive members on who would be the next Secretary General.<br /><br />According to the Interpol, which has representatives from 190 countries, the appointment of Secretary General shall be proposed by the Executive Committee and approved by the General Assembly for a period of five years.<br /><br />The candidate can be re-appointed for other terms but must lay down office on reaching the age of 65 although he may be allowed to complete his term of office on reaching this age.The third term of current Secretary General Ronald K Noble, who has been holding the post since 2000, ends next year. The External Affairs Ministry has forwarded CBI's request to the Home Ministry and the Department of Personnel and Training, the cadre controlling authority of CBI, for their views, the sources said. The Secretary General heads the Interpol's general secretariat in Lyon and is effectively the chief full-time official of the organization. The Secretary General shall engage and direct the staff, administer the budget and organize and direct the permanent departments, according to the directives decided upon by the General Assembly or the Executive Committee.</p>
