Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday said the imposition of Emergency in 1975 was "murder" of the Constitution, and called it the ''most inhuman act" of Indian democratic history".

"Imposition of Emergency on 25th June 1975 was murder of Constitution. On #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas, I pay tribute to millions of Satyagrahis who fought to revive democracy & continued their struggle to safeguard constitutional values during darkest period of India's democratic history," Sinha said in a post on X.

Later in the day, the LG inaugurated an exhibition on Emergency.

"Inaugurated 1975 Emergency Exhibition at Convention Centre, Jammu. In that darkest period in India's democratic history, the soul of the country was crushed, civil liberties were attacked, Constitutional safeguards were violated and dreams of nation-building were buried," he said. (PTI)

Motihari (Bihar), Jun 25 (PTI) Senior BJP leader Anurag Thakur on Wednesday described the Emergency as a "blot on the world's largest democracy", and blamed it on the "dictatorial streak" of the Congress which then ruled the country.

Addressing a press conference in East Champaran district of Bihar, the Lok Sabha MP also slammed former chief minister and RJD president Lalu Prasad, saying, "A product of the JP movement that challenged the Congress' dictatorship is now sitting in that party's lap."

"By imposing the Emergency, Indira Gandhi had trampled upon Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution. Her grandson Rahul Gandhi likes to keep the same Constitution in his pocket. This shows the party's disregard for the Constitution," alleged the former Union minister. (PTI)

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday said that the imposition of Emergency 50 years ago is a reminder to future generations that democracy must never be taken for granted.

He was addressing a function organised at Manan Kendra here to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' (the day on which the Constitution was murdered) marking the imposition of Emergency by former prime minister Indira Gandhi on this day in 1975.

"This day (June 25) serves as a reminder to future generations that democracy must never be taken for granted. It requires constant vigilance, active participation, and respect for constitutional values," Tamang said. (PTI)

Veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa on Wednesday accused the Congress of putting its survival above the soul of India's democracy by imposing Emergency 50 years ago.

The former Karnataka chief minister recalled that he was a young activist and was jailed for opposing the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's "dictatorship" during the Emergency.

"Today marks 50 years since the darkest assault on Indian democracy - the Congress-imposed Emergency of 1975. Fundamental rights were suspended, the Constitution throttled, Parliament silenced, and the press gagged. It wasn't war or national crisis, but a desperate attempt by the then PM to cling to power after her disqualification by the Allahabad HC. Congress put its survival above the soul of our democracy," Yediyurappa said in a post on 'X'. (PTI)

On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday said the contribution of the Sangh Parivar and the then opposition leaders in the restoration of democracy was "historic".

He demanded that the current Congress brass apologise to the people of the country for the "stigma" of the Emergency.

Due to the struggles of those who fought against the Emergency, India has now become the largest and most vibrant republic in the world, Yadav said in a statement.

The ruling BJP is observing the anniversary of the imposition of Emergency by then prime minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'.

The 21-month period had seen the suspension of civil liberties, the arrest of opposition leaders and the suppression of press freedom. (PTI)

The Emergency imposed in the country parallelled the "cruelty" of the Sultanate, Mughal and British eras, Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena said on Wednesday.

Speaking at an event at Thyagraj stadium to mark the 50th anniversary of Emergency imposition in the country, Saxena said it has now become a "fashion" to carry a copy of the Constitution and talk about constitutionality.

"We need to first understand the soul and the culture of India enshrined in the Constitution. If we achieve this, we would not require to wave the copy of the Constitution," the LG said in an apparent reference to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Save Democracy' call.

Not only the democracy and civil rights were "brutally trampled" by the imposition of Emergency but the Constitution was also "murdered", Saxena said.
