A professor of Jadavpur University in Kolkata courted controversy through his Facebook post urging men to seek out virgin brides.

The professor, Kanak Sarkar, also compared virgin girls to "sealed bottle or sealed packet" in his post on Sunday, which he later deleted. Calls to Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das went unanswered.

Sarkar, a professor of International Relations, sought to strengthen his argument in favour of virgin brides by asking men whether they would buy a bottle of cold drink or a packet of biscuits if the seal was broken.

"Many boys are fools. They are not aware of having virgin girl as wife. Virgin girl is like sealed bottle or sealed packet. Are you willing to bottle of cold drinks or a packet of biscuit with seal broken," stated Sarkar in the post. The screenshot of his post has gone viral.

Sarkar also sought to link virginity of women with culture and sexual hygiene.

"It is the same case with your wife. A girl is biologically sealed from birth until it is opened. A virgin girl means many things accompanied such as values, culture, sexual hygiene. To most boys virgin wife is like angel," stated Sarkar in his post.

Even though he deleted the post, Sarkar in another post defended his comments as "personal opinion" and cited the Supreme Court striking down section 66 of the IT Act.

Supreme Court has repealed section 66A of IT Act and given freedom of expression on social media.
