<p>As many as 106 couples have registered to enter wedlock at Subharambha, a mass marriage programme planned by the district administration at Kalamandir on Srikanteshwara Swamy temple premises, Nanjangud, on November 8.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The programme, planned to promote simple marriage concept and bring reforms in the society, assumes significance in the wake of marriage turning a burden for many. Interestingly, of those who have evinced interest to tie the nuptial knot, 29 are from farming community.<br /><br />Application details<br /><br />Among seven taluks in the district, H D Kote taluk tops with 28 duly filled in applications received against 33 issued, followed by Mysuru taluk, 26 applications received against 33 applications issued, Periyapatna-19 (issued 20), Nanjangud-14 (16), Hunsur-nine (10), T Narsipur-six (7) and K R Nagar-4.<br /><br />The highest of 11 farmers have enrolled in Nanjangud taluk, followed by 10 from Periyapatna, five from T Narsipur and three from Hunsur taluks. In the remaining three taluks, none from farming community have applied.<br /><br />Interestingly, when the registration had touched 97 applications, 17 brides/grooms belonged to different castes, opting for inter-caste marriage, while one from muslim community, followed by scheduled caste-40, scheduled tribe-20, other backward classes (OBC)- 15 and others-four.<br /><br />Minister’s contribution<br /><br />According to Deputy Commissioner C Shikha, who is also the brain behind the very programme, Revenue and District In-charge Minister V Srinivas Prasad has promised to donate his one month’s salary towards marriage expenses.<br /><br />Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) is sponsoring 10 couples’ expenses, followed by banks and other like-minded institutions who have expressed their willingness to do their mite.<br /><br />The district administration has planned this programme to promote simple marriage, the officials said. A tableau on ‘Shubharambha’ by the district administration had drawn attention of the public during the Jamboo Savari, the grand finale of Dasara festivities. </p>
