<p> More than 750 senior sportspersons are expected to take part in the 34th State-level Masters Athletics Sports Meet to be held at the district stadium on January 5 and 6. <br /><br /></p>.<p>Around 500 senior sportspersons from various parts of the State have already registered themselves for the event, which is being organised by the Karnataka Masters Athletics Association, in association with its district counterpart. <br /><br />The district will thus welcome the New Year with a state-level sports meet, which is being conducted for the first time in the district. Kolar has comparatively a higher number of senior athletes. Now being the host of the event, it has organised various competitions for athletes from various age groups. <br /><br />Athletes between the age group of 35 and 80 years, for men and for women, between the age group of 35 to 75 years, can take part in the various events. The district stadium is being spruced up for the great occasion.<br /><br />Events for men<br /><br />Following are the events that will be held for men - 100 mtrs, 200 mtrs, 400 mtrs, 800 mtrs, 1,500 mtrs, 5,000 mtrs, 10,000 mtrs long run, five km walk, discus throwing, hammer throw, javelin throw, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, 100 hurdles (50 and 55 years), 110 hurdles (35 and 45 years), 300 mtrs hurdles (60 and 70 years), 400 mtrs hurdles (35 and 45 years) 80 mtrs hurdles (40 to 60 years), 3,000 mtrs steeple chase contests - will be mark the State-level sports meet.<br /><br />Events for women<br /><br />Following are the events that will be held for women - 100 mtrs, 200 mtrs, 400 mtrs, 800 mtrs, 1,500 mtrs, 5,000 mtrs, 10,000 mtrs running long, five km walk, discus throw, hammer throw, javelin throw, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, 100 mtrs hurdles (to all those above 35 years), 300 mtrs hurdles (between 50 and 60 years), 400 mtrs hurdles (35 and 45 mtrs), 80 mtrs hurdles (40 and 60 years), 2,000 mtrs steeple chase contests - will be held. <br /><br />Cross-country race<br /><br />Also, apart from the above competitions, a 10 km-long and five km-long cross-country running races will also be held for men and women between 35 and 50 years of age.<br />Since this is an open sports meet, anybody can take part in the events, according to Association secretary and veteran sportsperson V Marappa.<br /><br />Speaking to Deccan Herald, here on Tuesday, he said, all those above 60 years, who are interested to take part in the various events, should compulsorily submit their medical certificates. <br /><br />Events like pole vault and steple chase will be held at the Kantheerava Stadium in Bangalore, he added.<br /><br />Stadium spruced up<br /><br />Meanwhile, preparations are going on in full swing since Monday onwards, at the district stadium in the City, which will be hosting the great event. As many as 30 sports experts will be arriving from Bangalore on January 4 to the City. The services of as many as 40 physical teachers will taken for the conduct of the event.<br /><br />The field and rings for the shot put and discus throw are also being readied and efforts are on to keep the stadium clean from shrubs, thorns, stones and bushes. The stadium is being spruced up and waste and garbage is being cleared. <br /><br />Boarding and lodging facilities are being provided to the out-station sportspersons at the Venkateshwara Kalyana Mantapa, near the railway over-bridge, the Kalyana Mantapa belonging to the Kumbara community and at various other places, which are in close proximity to the stadium. <br /><br />Also, apart from these facilities, the secretary informed that star sports personalities will be provided accommodation at the Sports Residential School. <br /><br />While, Union Minister K H Muniyappa will be inaugurating the programme, Minister R Varthur Prakash will be presiding over the programme.<br /><br />President of the Zilla Panchayat Chowdeshwari will set in motion the sports activities and former minister K Shrinivas Gowda will be hoisting the sports flag.<br /></p>
