<p>Residents of Sankeshwar in Hukkeri taluk were left astonished as a large number of military mortar shells were recovered from a open well in a field on the outskirts of the town on Tuesday. <br /><br /></p>.<p>The shells were found in the 50-foot-deep well belonging to former minister Malharigouda Patil. Workers first came across one mortar shell while cleaning the well, taking them by surprise. As they dug deeper, 40 more shells were recovered. <br /> <br />The matter was brought to the notice of the police who have now secured the shells. The district police have contacted the officials of the Indian Army and those of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, so that they can throw light on the shells. <br /><br />Police said the shells might have got discharged after being inside the well for long years. <br />Speaking to Deccan Herald Superintendent of Police B R Ravikantegowda said the mortars belong to the armoury of the Army. It is said that the Army had been using such mortars during the wars in the 1970s.</p>
