He was addressing the two-day international biennial conference on ‘Legal Education in India - Stepping out of Ivory Tower.’<br /><br />The Union Government, he claimed, had enacted ‘momentous’ legislations like the Right To Information, Right To Education Act, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), etc. The National Food Security bill, another important legislation, would be passed soon. <br /><br />The conference, organised jointly by the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) and the National Law School of India University Bangalore, is being held in the City after 18 years. <br /><br />Supreme Court Judge Justice H L Dattu said that aspiring lawyers should study issues like environment protection, human rights, intellectual property rights, alternative dispute resolution, and corporate governance in the backdrop of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regime. <br /><br />He said the legal education system should cater to the needs of business and industry in the wake of globalisation. Prof David McQuoid-Mason, President of CLEA felt the need for reforming legal education. <br />Chairman of the Competition Commission Appellate Tribunal Justice Arijit Pasayat said legal education should impart professional skills and high standards to the students. </p>
