Amid revision, BBMP property tax portal remains shut

Bengaluru: In an unusual development, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike's property tax portal has been suspended for the fourth consecutive day of the new financial year.

Although the civic body has announced that payments will be accepted from 5 pm on Saturday, there are chances of further delays. This is because the BBMP has undertaken the task of recalculating the property tax at the last moment. 

The revised property tax will likely include a garbage tax, a new component aimed at collecting fees for household waste management. The civic body plans to charge between Rs 10 and Rs 400 per month, depending on the total built-up area of the building, rather than the size of the plot.

Additionally, the BBMP has introduced a new formula to assess the parking tax.

The BBMP will charge Rs 2 per unit area for parking slots in residential buildings and Rs 3 for commercial buildings. This move has drawn criticism, as it is expected to burden residents, while benefiting commercial units, especially shopping malls.

It is important to note that residential parking slots are typically used for personal purposes without generating any monetary profit, whereas commercial units are sold, leased, and often charge for parking to make a profit.

Despite this, there is not much difference in the charges imposed on residential and commercial parking spaces.
