<p>On Saturday, Mayor S K Nataraj had declared that the award instituted in the name of the founder of the City had been given to 200 persons. But by evening, the number went up to 230. When the list was sent to media houses, it contained 234 names. By Sunday evening, the Palike came out with a list of 264 people.<br /><br />Twenty-four hours later, the number increased from 264 to 276. The award comes along with a cash of Rs 25,000 and a citation.</p>.<p>The awardees were honoured for their “contributions in various fields”, ranging from dance, music, art, culture, politics, social service, science, business and journalism. Prajavani Associate Editor Padmaraj Dandavathi and Senior News Editor Gangadhar Mudaliar were among the recipients of the award.<br /><br />The programme marked a colourful beginning in the presence of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, BJP MP Ananth Kumar, Mayor S K Nataraj, MPs and MLAs of the City and the corporators.</p>.<p>Speaking on the occasion, Yeddyurappa said the commercial run of the Metro Rail would begin shortly. He reiterated that Kempegowda’s statue would be installed inside Cubbon Park. </p>.<p>A legislation has already been passed to name the international airport after Kempegowda. </p>.<p>Birth centenary <br /></p>.<p>The fifth birth centenary of Kempegowda was celebrated with great pomp and gaiety on Monday. People from all walks of life joined the celebrations organised by the BBMP.<br /><br />Palike authorities celebrated the event on the day when the historic Karaga festival began, as it is widely believed that Kempegowda's birthday is associated with the fest.<br /><br />The two weeks of preparations for the event reached its fruition on Monday when the City was all decked up. Important roads and junctions were packed with festoons, posters and Kannada flags.<br /><br />The festivities started in the morning when the mayor offered garlands to Kempegowda's statue near the Palike head office. A procession comprising folk dancers, Nandidhwaja and Dollu Kunitha team was taken out from the head office to the Lalbagh where tributes were paid at the tower constructed by Kempegowda. </p>.<p>The procession then marched to Koramangala, where garlands were offered at the grave of Kempegowda's daughter-in-law. Later, it proceeded to three other towers constructed by Kempegowda at Ulsoor Lake, Kempambudhi Lake and Ramana Maharshi Garden.</p>
