The camp, which will be held from October 2 to the end of November, will also focus on de-addiction of alcoholics and smokers through counselling.

Bangalore has 327 notified slums with a population of 9,52,911 of which 47,655 are above the age of 30. The BBMP has coordinated with the Health department by providing their infrastructure –– health centres and urban family welfare centres –– for the screening of the patients.

A team of expert doctors and their staff from eight medical colleges in and around Bangalore have come forward to participate in the screening camps.

The colleges participating in the camp:  Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, St John’s Medical College and Hospital, Rajarajeshwari Medical College, Vaidehi Medical College, MVJ Medical College, M S Ramaiah Medical College and Ambedkar Institute of Medical Sciences. Each medical college will provide at least six teams with each team comprising one doctor, two paramedical staff (staff nurse/experienced ANM), an assistant from the medical college and a counsellor.

Mayor S K Nataraj will launch the programme at the Samudaya Bhavan in his own ward Sarakki, where the health camp will begin at 12 noon on Saturday.
