BBMP marshals, stringent in their enforcement of compulsory face masks and other Covid-19 guidelines, have now been asked to shift their focus to solid waste management.

As the BBMP resolves to secure a high rank in Swachh Survekshan 2021, the marshals have been ordered to monitor cleanliness and hygiene across the city.

The civic body has deployed marshals across the city to stop littering of the streets and identify areas that need cleaning.

According to the BBMP chief marshal Rajbir Singh, the marshals will be focusing on Swachh Survekshan for the next two months.

As the marshals prepare for the survey, citizens assumed they will not levy fines on those without face masks. But Singh confirmed that they will continue to penalise violators and a separate team has been put in charge in that regard.

“Since the pandemic began, marshals were unable to focus on their ward duties,” Singh said. “Now that the positive cases have come down and a vaccine is available, we are moving on with Swachh Survekshan. But if marshals come across violators of Covid norms during their duty, they will be fined.”

BBMP Special Commissioner D Randeep said marshals will continue to collect fines on those seen without face masks, though they will also be going after litterers.

He said the marshals penalise close to 1,300 offenders every day, while also observing that citizens have become aware and responsible in following Covid norms.
