Bengaluru now categorised into 5 new municipal corporations, Here's all you need to know

Bengaluru: A revised categorisation of the city's corporations and assembly constituencies was release earlier this month.

The popular location in South Bengaluru, Basavanagudi, which has the popular 'Big Bull Temple', is now listed under the Bengaluru West municipal corporation. Meanwhile, RR Nagar, a western suburb of Bengaluru is made a part of Bengaluru South corporation.

Central Corporation

Assembly Constituencies: CV Raman Nagar, Chamarajpet, Chickpet, Gandhinagar, Shanthinagar, Shivajinagar.

Comprising some of the city's most densely populated areas (1.5 million as per 2023 data), the Central Corporation includes prominent markets and heritage spots. With the smallest area, 78 sq km, among the five new municipal corporations, it still draws in significant tax revenue, totally to Rs 659 crore.

East Corporation

Assembly Constituencies: KR Puram and Mahadevapura (excluding Bellandur ward).

Home to several waterbodies and residential layouts, East Bengaluru contributes the highest projected property tax among the the five corporations, with a collection of Rs 912 crore. Despite its relatively low population of only 0.9 million, its economic significance is undeniable. It covers 168 sq km of the city.

North Corporation

Assembly Constituencies: Byatarayanapura, Dasarahalli (excluding Shettihalli), Mallasandra, Bagalkunte, T Dasarahalli, Hebbal, Pulakeshinagar (except Kushal Nagar), RR Nagar (excluding Jalahalli), JP Park, Yeshwanthpura, Sarvagnanagar, Yelahanka.

The North Corporation encompasses many prominent locations of Bengaluru, extending around 158 sq km. It holds a population of 1.8 million and generates a property tax of Rs 543 crore.

South Corporation

Assembly Constituencies: BTM Layout, Bangalore South, Bommanahalli, Jayanagar, Mahadevapura (part of Bellandur), Padmanabhnagar (Banashankari Temple, Kumaraswamy Layout, Padmanabhanagar, Chikkalasandra), RR Nagar (RR Nagar ward), Yeshwanthpur (part of Hemmigepura).

The South municipal corporation, extending to 147 sq km, of the city is home to both residential areas and commercial developments. It ranks second in both population (1.7 million) and tax collection (Rs 733 crore).

West Corporation

Assembly Constituencies: Basavanagudi, Dasarahalli (Chokkasandra, PIA, Rajagopalnagar, Hegganahalli), Govindaraja Nagar, Mahalakshmi Layout, Malleshwaram, Padmanaba Nagar (Hosur Halli, Ganesh Mandir, Kari Sandra, Yediyur), Rajaji Nagar, RR Nagar (HMT, Lakshmidevinagar), Laggere, Kottigepalya, Jnanabharathi, RR Nagar ward, Vijaya Nagar.

With 2.6 million population, the highest among the five, the West Corporation comprises of some of the notable temples and shopping malls. It spreads to 161 sq km and collects Rs 580 crore projected tax revenue ranks mid-range.

Five Assembly constituencies have been carved up and split across multiple corporations, as the state government moves ahead with its plan to dismantle the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

The government has however retained the boundaries of 22 Assembly segments while forming the new municipal bodies, which is expected to come into effect in a month’s time.
