Bescom ropes in NGOs to clear garbage

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has decided to enter into a public-private-partnership (PPP) model with City-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to clear garbage on their properties which have been turned into dumping yards.

Taking cognizance of the heaps of garbage near Bescom transformers and feeder stations, the company, at its organisation review meeting on March 13, decided to adopt the PPP model for ‘maintenance and upkeep of Bescom properties and surroundings’. It has also sought public participation in the task.

As per the plan, Bescom will depute a personnel to identify the locations which need an ‘urgent’ makeover in the City.

 “We will take a photograph of the location and provide necessary help to the NGO for clearing the waste and for its maintenance in the long run,” said a senior Bescom official. Bescom will provide the necessary aid even to those locations which will be identified by local residents or Residents’ Welfare Associations.

“We will have both, our engineers and volunteers, aiding us in maintaining Bescom properties,” said the official.  

Bescom said it would depute its staffers to assist the NGO in clearing the waste and to safeguard the volunteers against obvious ‘dangers’ involved around their transformers and feeder stations.

The equipment required for clearing waste and beautification of the area will be provided by the local Bescom assistant executive engineer. The company has tied-up with ‘The Ugly Indian’, an NGO, to execute the project on a pilot basis.
