Major Sandeep's plaque damaged by truck, not vandalised

A plaque put up to honour 26/11 martyr Sandeep Unnikrishnan was found damaged, triggering massive outrage on social media on Monday.

A few Twitter users initially alleged that some miscreants had vandalised the structure in Yelahanka New Town. But a police investigation revealed that the structure was damaged by a truck.

After the pictures of the damaged memorial were put up on social media, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara directed BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad to restore the structure.

Parameshwara, who also holds the city development portfolio, tweeted: “Am shocked to learn about the damage that has been caused to Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's memorial in Yelahanka. I have asked @BBMPCOMM to ensure that this is set right immediately.”

The Yelahanka traffic police booked a case and seized the truck responsible for the damage. “After receiving the complaint, we found that a truck (KA-04-B-4138) had hit the structure unintentionally on Monday morning following a brake failure,” said a traffic police officer attached to the Yelahanka station.

"The owner of the truck has agreed to restore the structure. The work is already in progress,” he said.

Unnikrishnan died fighting terrorists in the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.
