Amritanshu Das, a final year science student, uses the brush to put his soul into words in the form of calligraphy. He uses it to create works that tend to draw attention and also elevate the impact of what the words signify.

He started doing calligraphy when he noticed the fancy lettering in a friend’s notebook in 6th grade. He was 11 at the time and wanted to explore it more. He started by imitating the strokes in the notebook and eventually learnt to do it himself. He immediately bought calligraphy pens and started nurturing his skill. “I started following a lot of Instagram pages and a few artists, so they inspire me to create new things,” he explains.

His started at a young age, but his work got recognition only when he joined college when he began sharing it on Instagram. He has over 600 followers on his page. What started out as something he did just for himself, a book cover or a greeting card, has gained popularity today.

When asked about the challenges he faces, he says, “I tried following Inktober, but ran out of ideas within two weeks.”

He has attempted a lot of techniques and new things that he doesn’t share with anyone. “If I like it, I know other people will like it too. So, I don’t share it if I don’t like it,” he explains.

Apart from doodling, Amritanshu also indulges in creating pieces using acrylic paints and watercolours. He makes bookmarks for his friends and family and also does work that can be ordered. “Sometimes I customise by using their names on the bookmark, making them feel special, I feel happy about it,” he adds about his motivation.

When asked about how long he takes for each work, he says, “Sometimes, I do it over a few days because of college, lettering for about an hour over the span of 2 or 3 days.”

Inspired by his senior, Amritanshu has a dream of taking up calligraphy as a full-time career. He hopes to achieve it on a different level and make it popular in the process.
