<p>With a new commissioner taking over the reigns of the Palike, the Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs) gets a new lease of life to carry out minor civic works themselves in their respective areas. The Palike would provide the funds or matching grants. <br /><br />Though this idea got administrative approval around eight months back when Bharat Lal Meena was the in-charge Commissioner, the proposal was gathering dust all these months. With the return of Bharat Lal Meena as the new BBMP Commissioner, the idea has gathered momentum. Soon after assuming charge, Meena directed all the zonal commissioners and engineers to further the action plan and in this regard money was transferred to the zonal offices. The zonal offices will now have to contact the local RWAs or help set up the RWAs where there is no such association.<br /><br />“We have already transferred money to the zonal offices. Now the zonal offices will have to speedily form the ward committees in association with the RWAs,” Meena told <br />Deccan Herald.<br /><br />The action plan enables the RWAs to play a proactive role in the developmental process. The RWAs will have to form a ward committee comprising the RWA president, junior engineers, assistant engineers and BBMP’s local administrative officer of the ward. The ward committee will have to open a joint bank account where the BBMP will deposit the fund. The money is meant for carrying out emergency works of less than Rs one lakh. <br />Annually, works to the tune of Rs six lakhs can be spent. Meena said the BBMP will deposit a matching grant if the affluent RWAs generate money from their own resources.</p>
