Surging forward with a dream

The Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre opened its doors in 2000 with a vision and mission to provide the latest and affordable healthcare in India.

   The two focal points of the mission — medical education and healthcare services — continue to guide and strengthen their way forward.

The dream of its founder-chairman, DK Audikesavulu, is being taken forward by DA Kalpaja, director, Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre.

She says that the primary focus of the Centre is to provide world class rehabilitation at its best.

   “Our focus is early intervention and rehabilitation, which is yet to gather pace in our country. Our intention is also to provide the latest healthcare services at subsidised treatment costs,” Kalpaja tells Metrolife.

The hospital has a state-of-the-art oncology centre and the rehabilitation centre deals with all kinds of disabilities, especially among children aged from 0 to five years.

“It’s not only children with disabilities. We extend early intervention, diagnosis and treatment to older people as well. We have integrated the mainline treatment with
alternate therapies like Ayurveda and yoga. We know that it is not a one-point-solution but we have made a beginning,” states Kalpaja, who confesses that the urge to start the rehabilitation centre was born out of personal experience.

Healthcare is most challenging, says Kalpaja, who feels that autism and kidney failures have become common now.

“Early birth, stress and the fast-paced lifestyle are the main contributors for autism and kidney diseases. It is unfortunate that dialysis has become so common,” she adds.  

In its effort to contribute something substantial to people and to the medical fraternity, on the occasion of ‘World Disability Day’ on December 3, the Institute has, for the first time, organised an international conference titled ‘Skill Matrix 2013’ at the Institute, which is located in Whitefield on December 2 and 3, followed by workshops from December 4 to 6. The conference will bring together the best of medical and rehabilitation professionals from across the globe.

“In this conference, we focus on a multi-disciplinary approach on developmental disabilities. We hope to bring together the specialities in neurology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, neuro-surgery, paediatrics and ENT together to find solutions to the challenges we face in dealing with developmental disabilities,” Kalpaja observes.

Kalpaja further states that the conference will focus on medicine and education.
 
“There will be speakers who will dwell on the latest medical procedures. The workshops will give a hands-on experience on the latest in the medical field. We have been assisted and supported by the Rajiv Gandhi University and medical specialists from California,” she notes. Kalpaja was also recently awarded the ‘Indira Gandhi Sadbhavna Award’ for outstanding individual achievements and distinguished services to the nation.
