A wearable device to keep women and children safe

A city start-up has come up with a solution to track women and children while on a pilgrimage or trekking in 'out-of-reach' areas.

"UNI Suraksha", developed by UniGPS, is a GPS-based system with two devices: Robo shield and Kiddo shield. The devices work with a SIM card and have battery back-up for more than 10 days. The GPS Wearable Watches and Portable Tracking Devices were launched on Thursday.

Deepti Kohli, founder and CEO of UniGPS, said the product aims to minimise security issues and threats of kidnapping in the wake of safety issues for women while riding cabs or in public places.

"Using the SOS key (in the devices), children and women can raise an alarm after sensing danger. The live, real-time tracking feature offers assurance for parents/guardian in terms of the location," Deepti said, adding that the features in the devices are user-friendly.

"My daughter travels far from home to her college and there's no direct connectivity," said Sanjana Sharma, a mother of two, who has been using the devices. "With the device, I’m able to track her location and know she's safe."

Though the device is similar to a cell phone, Sanjana would not like to give her son – who is in class 9 - a cell phone as he might get addicted.
