Boy washed away in open drain

The deceased has been identified as Kumaraswamy Shivabasayya Hiremath. He fell into the drainage while bringing dinner from a hotel for his father. He was washed away in the drain. Later, fire fighters fished out his body from the drainage with the help of an earth mover at some distance.

Kumaraswamy was a sixth standard student at Chaitra Kannada Convent High School at Santhosh Nagar at KHB Colony in the City. His father Shivabasayya, who hails from Uppanasi village in Hangal taluk of Haveri district, runs a tea shop at Veerapur Oni here since eight years.

District In-charge and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar visited the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) where the body of Kumaraswamy was kept.

He announced Rs one lakh compensation to the parents of the deceased, on behalf of the State Government. The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation would also give Rs 50,000 compensation, he said. “Measures will be taken to close open gutters in all wards in the twin-cities. Corporation Commissioner K V Trilokchandra will be asked to conduct an inquiry and officials have been instructed to see that such incidents did not take place again,” he added.
