CFTRI Open Day on Oct 29, 30

The city-based Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has organised ‘Open Day’ to mark it’s Foundation Day on October 29 and 30.

The CSIR-CFTRI will be open for public as well as students on both the days. In a press conference here, CFTRI Director KSMS Raghava Rao said, MP Pratap Simha and Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) Director Anil Dutt Semwal will be chief guests during the inaugural function of the Open Day, scheduled to be held at 10.30 am.

The latest innovative machines and processes will be on display. The Ragi Mudde making machine, which can make around 300 ragi balls in an hour, and the Carbonated Fruit Juice processor, which adds fizz while retaining the nutrition of the fruit juice, will be on display among others, he said.

About 100 volunteers will guide the visitors to move around the campus. All the 16 research departments will display posters and products that will shed light on the research work. In addition, machines designed by the institute, processed products developed by the researchers and some simple testing procedures used in food processing will be demonstrated for the public, he said.

Raghava Rao said scientists are experimenting with Carbonated Fruit Pulp Juices. Pulp juice of grapes has received a good feedback. Similarly, pulp juice of mango, lemon, pomegranate and litchi can be produced, he said. The director said that the institute is concentrating on developing traditional food processing units like a poori making machine.

He said the aim of the Open day is to share the innovations and products of the CFTRI. It also educates people about how public money is being used on developing science and technology by the institution. The institute is working on the technologies, which ensures nutritious food for the people. Nutrition is a major concern and the mortality rate of lactating mothers and babies can be reduced by supplying nutritious food, he said.

“Nutritious food is the foundation for nation building. The innovations of CFTRI meets international standards and the focus is on research,” he added.
