<p class="byline">Renewed focus and unmatched thrust on PU education in recent times have resulted in the increasing demand for opening PU colleges across the state especially in the private sector.</p>.<p>As more and more career avenues open up based on the PU performance, the demand for PU colleges has shot up by a whopping 83.88% among the private unaided colleges while the same is a mere 3.36% among the government colleges.</p>.<p>Similarly, unlike previous years, the Pre-university department witnessed a sharp increase in the number of applications seeking permission to set up new private PU colleges for the ensuing 2019-20 academic year.</p>.<p>As many as 425 such applications have been received as against the 360 applications received during 2018-19.</p>.<p>At the same time, the number of government PU colleges has more or less remained stagnant. Interestingly, a decade ago, the number of private PU colleges was just 1,737. But today the numbers have swelled to 3,194 across Karnataka.</p>.<p>The sudden rush and demand for colleges have caught the attention of academic and education experts who have expressed shock and concerns over the mushrooming of colleges as it results in unhealthy competition.</p>.<p>Prof VP Niranjanaradhya, senior academician said, “Permission for new colleges must be given based on the number of students passing Class 10 exams and not based on the infrastructure facilities that these colleges claim.”</p>.<p>Prof Aradhya also opined that in most of the cases, new PU colleges are sanctioned because of the sheer pressure and recommendation. “What is the need for sanctioning new PU colleges when there is already a college run by the government which is witnessing poor admission,” he questioned.</p>.<p>Interestingly, of all the districts, Bengaluru South submitted the highest number of applications with as many as 53 such requests followed by Bengaluru North-38, Kalaburagi-37 and Mysuru-28.</p>.<p> The districts like Kodagu, Sirsi and Karwar received just one application each. C Shikha, Director, PU Education department told <span class="italic">DH</span> that they are yet to verify the applications. “We have received applications, but permission will be given only after verifying the documents and field inspection,” she clarified.</p>
